After arrival to the US

After arrival to the US

How do I get to my employer?
You’ll need to manage transportation yourself. Most participants arrive at JFK Airport in New York. After passing through passport control, collecting your luggage, and clearing customs, you’ll receive an I-94 form attached to your passport.

From JFK to the city:

  • Metro: Take the AIRTRAIN ($13) to the Howard Beach JFK station, then transfer to the "A" subway train ($2.50).
  • Taxi: Costs around $60.

If you arrive in the evening, consider staying overnight at a hostel before heading to a bus or train station. Plan your travel across the U.S. in advance using Greyhound (buses) or Amtrak (trains).

Where should I store my money?
In a bank account. Nowhere else. Keeping money at home is risky due to frequent theft cases.

How to avoid gaining weight in the U.S.?

  • Work hard.
  • Drink less "soda" (the American term for sugary drinks like Coke and Pepsi).
  • Commute by bike if possible.
  • Avoid overindulging in free food at work.
  • Cook healthy meals at home occasionally.

What’s the maximum stay in the U.S.?
5 months total: up to 4 months of work and 1 month for travel.

How much does food cost weekly?

  • If you work in food service: ~$15-20 per week.
  • Otherwise: ~$50-60 per week.

What about Internet access?
Every town has a library with computers and internet access, often free or very cheap (e.g., $1 for 30 minutes). There’s also widespread Wi-Fi availability, so if you bring a laptop, you can access the internet from your room for free.

Should I bring a mobile phone?
Yes, having a mobile number is handy for job and housing searches, allowing employers or landlords to contact you directly.
