How to apply
Step 1. September 2024 — February 2025
Get acquainted with the participation conditions for your desired program. The level and duration of the interview depend on the program you’ve chosen. For instance, an interview for the Work and Travel program typically lasts about 5 minutes and includes general questions (studies, interests, etc.).
If your language proficiency meets the program requirements, you sign a participation agreement and pay the registration fee.
Note that the program is usually cheaper at the start of the season (in the fall) and becomes slightly more expensive closer to November-December.
After signing the agreement, you complete an online application for your chosen program. At this stage, you also select your departure date.
Participants in the Work and Travel SELF-ARRANGED option are responsible for finding a job on their own. Once an employer is found, job offers are sent to the International Exchange Center’s partners for review. After the job offer is approved by the program sponsor, a DS-2019 form is issued, which is required to obtain a visa.
Step 2. March 2025
The first interview dates at the embassy for obtaining a J-1 visa are scheduled.
Step 3. March — June 2025
During this period, embassy interviews take place, and participants in the Work and Travel PLUS and Work and Travel FULL SERVICE options begin receiving job offers.
After receiving the visa participants get a medical insurance and informational materials for the program.
If the visa is denied, participants are refunded all fees paid towards program participation, except for $35 for SEVIS, $30, and the consular fee.
Step 4. May — June — July 2025
Step 5. August — September — October 2025 (for Work and Travel)
Returning home!
In addition to your summer earnings, you can receive a bonus after returning by applying for a tax refund.
