Road from the Airport and public transport

A taxi from Heathrow Airport to the city center will cost you around £35-40. In addition, buses serve every half an hour: for an adult, a ticket costs 5 pounds, for a child under 15 years old — 3 pounds.

Londoners themselves believe that the most convenient mode of transport is the underground (the London Underground is the oldest in the world, it was built in 1863). Using the blue line trains, you will be in Trafalgar Square in 45 minutes. Trains run every 5-10 minutes, the ticket costs 3.1 pounds. You can get on the London Underground without a ticket, but never get off. At the exit, you must present the ticket either to the metro employee or drop it into the slot of the machines installed at the stations. If you come for a few days, we advise you to buy a week pass: it costs from 14 pounds, depending on the zone. The entrance to the underground in London is different at different stations, for example, in the center you will go down the iron stairs for a long time.

At the subway ticket offices, you can get a free scheme with the designation of 6 concentric zones into which the subway is divided. Bus routes are also divided into zones roughly corresponding to metro zones.

There are four types of tickets in the city: single tickets for the bus (sold on buses, cost depending on the distance, at least 50 pence), weekly bus passes, single tickets for the subway (they are “there” or “there and back”, cost depending from distance, minimum — 90 pence, maximum — 3 pounds), and travel cards (travelcard).

Travelcard is the most convenient and economical solution to the transport problem in London. They are valid on almost all buses, subways (Tube and Docklands Light Railway) and Network SouthEast trains within the city limits. Travel cards are not valid on Airbus — buses that are transported to Heathrow Airport. On night buses circulating between Trafalgar Square and the city districts at night, weekly and longer travel passes are valid, but one-day ones are not. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the fact that some travel cards “work” only after 9:30 in the morning.

The cost of travel tickets depends on the period and area of their validity. For most tourists, 1 and 2 zones are enough. A one-day ticket for them — Zone 1 & 2 Card — costs 2.65 pounds. A one-day All Zone Card (for all 6 zones, allowing, in particular, to get by metro to Heathrow Airport) — 3.65 pounds.

A passport photo is required for weekly tickets. For zones 1 and 2, such a pass costs 12.8 pounds. There are also travel cards for a month and even for a longer time.

There are two types of taxis in London. The famous “black cabs” are very good, but not cheap. They work according to the meter: 1.8 pounds for landing and 72 pence for 1 km. There are cheaper companies. Their cars are called minicabs (for the fact that they can carry not 5 passengers, like real “cabs”, but only four). They take orders only by phone, they work without counters, so you should inquire about the tariff in advance.

Car rental

You can rent a car right at the airport. Renting a car costs from 18 to 40 pounds per day, depending on the class of the car. A liter of gasoline will cost from 48 to 52 pence.

In England, for those who drive a car, there are many surprises. In addition to left-hand traffic, it should be taken into account that: • motorists making a maneuver on the left do not have an automatic advantage; • when entering an equivalent intersection, cars moving on the right side have just this advantage.

Parking in central London is prohibited, in other areas it is allowed to park a car for a fee ranging from 20p to 1 pound. If you violate the parking rules, your car can be rolled back to the police department and put “crabs” on the wheels. Therefore, many residents of the suburbs of London leave their cars in special paid parking lots of railway stations and go to the city by train. It is believed that it is less troublesome, cheaper, faster.

The speed limit in London is also limited to 48 km/h (30 mph), in other areas — 64–97 km/h (40–60 mph). In England it is mandatory to use seat belts.
